Can Type 2 Diabetes Be Reversed? Prevention, Prediabetes & Natural Blood Sugar Support

The Most Important Question in Diabetes
Can Type 2 diabetes be reversed?
Until relatively recently, the medical consensus was that Type 2 diabetes was a progressive, irreversible condition — one that could be managed but never undone. That consensus has shifted dramatically.
The landmark DiRECT Trial (Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial), published in The Lancet in 2018, demonstrated that intensive dietary intervention achieved remission of Type 2 diabetes in 46% of participants at 12 months — defined as HbA1c below 48 mmol/mol without diabetes medication. At two years, 36% remained in remission.
The conclusion is now well-supported: Type 2 diabetes, particularly in its earlier stages, can be put into remission through intensive lifestyle intervention. And prediabetes — the stage before Type 2 — can be prevented from progressing in the majority of cases.
This is one of the most optimistic findings in modern medicine. And it puts the power confidently in your hands.
The Prevention Evidence: What Works
The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP)
The landmark US Diabetes Prevention Program, published in the New England Journal of Medicine (2002), followed 3,234 people with prediabetes over nearly three years. The results were striking:
- Intensive lifestyle intervention (diet + 150 minutes of exercise per week + modest weight loss) reduced the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by 58%
- In adults over 60, the reduction was 71%
- Metformin (the standard diabetes medication) reduced risk by only 31% — less than half the effect of lifestyle intervention
The message is unambiguous: lifestyle change is the most powerful intervention available for diabetes prevention — more powerful than medication.
Weight Loss
Excess body fat — particularly visceral fat around the abdomen and organs — is the primary driver of insulin resistance. The DIRECT trial demonstrated that weight loss of 15kg or more achieved remission in 86% of participants. Even modest weight loss of 5–10% of body weight significantly improves insulin sensitivity and blood glucose control.
Physical Activity
Exercise is one of the most potent insulin sensitizers available. Muscle contraction drives glucose into muscle cells independently of insulin — reducing blood glucose without requiring insulin at all. Both aerobic exercise and resistance training improve insulin sensitivity, with the combination being most effective. SEMDSA recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week for diabetes prevention and management.
Natural Supplements for Blood Sugar Prevention & Support
Targeted natural supplementation provides meaningful additional support for blood sugar regulation — particularly when combined with the lifestyle foundation above. Here are the Purple Cushhh products with the strongest evidence base.
Berberine 60 Capsules — Blood Sugar & Metabolic Health Support
Berberine is the most extensively researched natural compound for blood sugar management — and its evidence base is remarkable. Also known as the natural Ozempic. A 2008 meta-analysis in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism found berberine as effective as metformin (the standard first-line diabetes medication) for reducing fasting blood glucose and HbA1c in Type 2 diabetes patients.
Berberine works through multiple mechanisms: it activates AMPK (the body's metabolic master switch), improves insulin sensitivity, reduces glucose production in the liver, slows carbohydrate absorption in the gut, and supports healthy gut microbiome composition. It is one of the most powerful natural metabolic interventions available.
Evidence highlight: A 2012 meta-analysis of 14 randomized trials found berberine reduced HbA1c by an average of 0.9% — comparable to standard oral diabetes medications.
Ideal for: Prediabetes, Type 2 diabetes support, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, blood sugar regulation.
Blood Sugar Balance Combo — Milk Thistle, Chromium & Liver Support
A comprehensive multi-ingredient approach to blood sugar management. Chromium is an essential trace mineral that enhances insulin's action at the cellular level — improving glucose uptake and reducing insulin resistance. A 1997 landmark study in Diabetes found chromium supplementation significantly reduced HbA1c, fasting glucose, and insulin levels in Type 2 diabetes patients. Milk thistle (silymarin) supports liver health — critical because the liver plays a central role in glucose regulation, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (common in insulin resistance) significantly worsens blood sugar control.
Ideal for: Blood sugar regulation, insulin sensitivity, liver-related glucose dysregulation, comprehensive metabolic support.
Metabolic Balance System — Blood Sugar Regulation, Moringa & Weight Support
A holistic metabolic support system combining blood sugar regulation with nutritional support and weight management. Moringa — a key ingredient — has demonstrated blood glucose-lowering effects in multiple studies, with a 2016 review in the Journal of Diabetes Research confirming its insulin-sensitizing and anti-inflammatory properties. This combo addresses the metabolic dimension of diabetes prevention comprehensively.
Ideal for: Prediabetes, weight-related insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, comprehensive blood sugar and weight support.
Wondernut Wellness System — Mood, Superfood Nutrition & Blood Sugar Balance
Chronic stress and poor mood are underappreciated drivers of blood sugar dysregulation — cortisol directly raises blood glucose and promotes insulin resistance. This system addresses the stress-blood sugar connection alongside nutritional support, making it particularly valuable for individuals whose blood sugar challenges are driven or worsened by chronic stress.
Ideal for: Stress-related blood sugar dysregulation, emotional eating, comprehensive wellness support alongside blood sugar management.
Liver Plus 60 Capsules — Advanced Liver Support & Detox
The liver is the body's primary glucose regulator — it stores glucose as glycogen, releases it between meals, and is responsible for insulin clearance. In insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes, the liver becomes dysregulated — releasing too much glucose even when blood sugar is already elevated (hepatic glucose overproduction). Supporting liver health is therefore a critical but often overlooked component of blood sugar management.
Ideal for: Hepatic glucose regulation, fatty liver associated with insulin resistance, comprehensive metabolic support.
The Prevention Action Plan
If you have prediabetes or are at high risk of Type 2 diabetes, here is your evidence-based action plan:
- Get your numbers: HbA1c and fasting glucose — know exactly where you stand
- Target 5–10% weight loss if overweight — this single intervention has the greatest impact on insulin sensitivity
- Move daily: 30 minutes of moderate activity, 5 days a week. Walk after meals.
- Overhaul your carbohydrates: Replace high-GI foods with low-GI alternatives. Pair all carbs with protein, fat, and fibre.
- Eliminate sugary drinks: The single highest-impact dietary change for blood sugar
- Manage stress actively: Cortisol is a direct blood sugar raiser
- Supplement strategically: Berberine, chromium, and liver support provide meaningful additional benefit
- Monitor and retest: HbA1c every 3–6 months to track your progress
In Part 5, we cover natural support for those already living with a diabetes diagnosis — managing daily blood sugar, protecting against complications, and maintaining quality of life.

This article is for educational purposes only. Natural supplements should complement, not replace, prescribed diabetes medication. Always consult your healthcare practitioner before starting any new supplement, particularly if you are on diabetes medication, as blood sugar-lowering supplements may require medication adjustment.
